Wilderness and Culture Treks

Trekking through high and wild mountains or through hill-country villages has come to symbolize the ultimate in simplicity and minimalism. Equipment is pared down to bare necessities. Pack animals and lodge accommodations lighten our loads even further. Restriction-free treks are also available for families with children, mature travelers, and travellers with disabilities.

"I like to see your efforts to preserve nature and help locals understand what treasure they have and how they can protect them."

Ernst Merkhofer, client from Munich, Germany

SANTA CRUZ TREKKING ADVENTURE
2-15 August 2006 (14 days)
Itinerary : Prices &Terms : Peru Travel Info : Equipment List

This trek is an adventurous exploration of the Northern Cordillera Blanca, Peru 's highest mountain range. Starting in the Quechua village of Cashapampa , we will circumnavigate the high massifs of the Alpamayo and Santa Cruz peaks, finishing the trek in the hilltop village of Hualcayan . Crossing high mountain passes up to 5000M and camping among the alpine lakes makes this trek a challenge even for seasoned high-altitude trekkers. Burros will carry our loads, leaving us free to enjoy trekking with only a light day-pack

CORDILLERA HUAYHUASH / CORDILLERA RAURA

Trek to the source of the Amazon!  Truly a one-of-a-kind adventure!
5-17 July 2007 (13 days)
Itinerary : Prices &Terms : Peru Travel Info : Equipment List

Relatively unexplored by outsiders until the 1950's, the Cordillera Huayhuash is one of the classic trekking destinations of the world.  In our variation, we will cross several high passes and camp alongside trout-filled lakes.  After traversing the length of the Huayhuash, we'll continue along through the equally remote Cordillera Raura.  The trek will ultimately take us to the village of Mina Raura, and Laguna Ninococha, the source of the Amazon!

We'll also have the opportunity to ascend the non-technical peak of Nevado Leon Huaccanan.  The climbing isn't difficult, but crosses glaciers and snow slopes, and requires the use of ice-axe, crampons, rope, and harness.  No prior glacier travel or snow climbing experience is necessary, but this optional ascent is strenuous and a high level of fitness is required.

The Quechua culture is strongly present in the villages of this part of Peru, and it's not uncommon to encounter campesinos who speak only Quechua.

The abundant native flora and fauna includes puma, condors, vicuna, and several varieties of over-sized flowering lupines.

The route is inspiring with it's breath-taking beauty, and requires a high level of commitment and stamina.

PATAGONIA TREKKING ADVENTURE

15-30 December 2006 (16 days)

Itinerary : Prices & Terms : Argentina Travel Info : Equipment List

Patagonia's spectacular, unspoiled wilderness has an inspiring beauty that fires the imagination: soaring pink and white granite towers, golden grasslands, dense southern beech forests, enormous glaciers, and sparkling lakes of incredible hues. Some even say it's like the Grand Tetons and Yosemite rolled into one. This pristine beauty is preserved in two exceptionally scenic national parks: the breathtaking mountain environs of Torres del Paine National Park, Chile , and Argentina 's Los Glaciares National Park . You'll see the best of both on foot - from the famous ice-clad peaks and granite needles of the Torres del Paine in Paine National Park to the sheer-walled granite shark fin of 11,073-foot Fitzroy in Los Glaciares National Park . An ideal adventure for those who enjoy long hikes through landscapes so scenic they're beyond belief.

Strenuous day hikes, 5-10 hours

No back-packing, all equipment is transported by vehicles, boats, or porters

HIMALAYA

ANNAPURNA AND THE RODODENDRON VALLEY
11-25 October 2006 (15 days)
Itinerary : Prices &Terms : Nepal Travel Info : Equipment List

We begin this spectacular trek in the lush lakeside town of Pokhara . All nights are spent in comfortable guest-houses and lodges. We follow the course of the mighty Marsyangdi river to Mustang, the " Forbidden Kingdom ", and the pilgrimage site at Muktinath, holy to both Hindu and Buddhist faiths. Rhododendron forests are in bloom, their blossoms and fragrance filling the air.

Success in the Peruvian Andes!

3 July 2005 We at VisionQuest Journeys would like to congratulate John Krueger for his successful completion of our Expedition Training Course!

Krueger (Knoxville, TN) and guide Tom Torkelson, trained extensively on the peaks and glaciers of the Ishinca Valley. Crampon and ice-axe technique, glacier travel and crevasse rescue, high-mountain camping, and expedition strategy were studied in detail to prepare for the climbs which followed. The pair made ascents of Urus Este (5495M), Nevado Ishinca (5530M), and reached the high-point of the course at 5700M on Tocllaraju!

Congratulations, John!

Himalayan Sikkim New Trekking Mecca

Oct. 25, 2004  The partly-burnt juniper fronds and incense cones at a desolate Buddhist shrine dwarfed by Mount Kanchenjunga and its eight sister peaks tell the story — the Tibetan yak herders and shepherds are on their way down for the winter.

Tourist authorities say that with trails in Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh overloaded with trekkers, relatively untouched Sikkim has become the new destination for those searching for solitude in India's mountains.

Training

It stands to reason that your enjoyment of a climbing trip is significantly influenced by how fit you are on that trip. You greatly enhance your probability of success, increase your safety margin, decrease your chances of becoming ill or injured, and are not totally wasted at the end of the day if you are in better shape. Therefore, we at VisionQuest Journeys strongly suggest that you optimize your fitness level...

Brian Prax is our Staff Personal Trainer, and is currently writing a training manual for high-altitude expedition climbers.  He has custom designed expedition-specific training programs to help you be fully prepared for your up-coming trip.  Learn more about training from Brian, and see his 30-day Pre-Trek Training Program.
