Trekking through high and wild mountains or through hill-country
villages has come to symbolize the ultimate in simplicity and
minimalism. Equipment is pared down to bare necessities. Pack
animals and lodge accommodations lighten our loads even further. Restriction-free
treks are also available for families with children, mature travelers,
and travellers with disabilities.
"I
like to see your efforts to preserve nature and help locals understand
what treasure they have and how they can protect them."

the trek in the hilltop village of Hualcayan . Crossing high

CORDILLERA
HUAYHUASH / CORDILLERA RAURA
Trek
to the source of the Amazon! Truly a one-of-a-kind adventure!
5-17 July 2007 (13 days)

: Equipment List
Relatively
unexplored by outsiders until the 1950's, the Cordillera Huayhuash
is one of the classic trekking destinations of the world.
In our variation, we will cross several high passes and camp alongside
trout-filled lakes. After traversing the length of the Huayhuash,
we'll continue along through the equally remote Cordillera Raura.
The trek will ultimately take us to the village of Mina Raura,
and Laguna Ninococha, the source of the Amazon!
We'll
also have the opportunity to ascend the non-technical peak of
Nevado Leon Huaccanan. The climbing isn't difficult, but
crosses glaciers and snow slopes, and requires the use of ice-axe,
crampons, rope, and harness. No prior glacier travel or
snow climbing experience is necessary, but this optional ascent
is strenuous and a high level of fitness is required.
The
Quechua culture is strongly present in the villages of this part
of Peru, and it's not uncommon to encounter campesinos who speak
only Quechua.
The
abundant native flora and fauna includes puma, condors, vicuna,
and several varieties of over-sized flowering lupines.
The route
is inspiring with it's breath-taking beauty, and requires a high
level of commitment and stamina.

December 2006 (16 days)
Itinerary

Travel Info : Equipment List
Patagonia's
spectacular, unspoiled wilderness has an inspiring beauty that
fires the imagination: soaring pink and white granite towers,
golden grasslands, dense southern beech forests, enormous glaciers,
and sparkling lakes of incredible hues. Some even say it's like
the Grand Tetons and Yosemite rolled into one. This pristine beauty
is preserved in two exceptionally scenic national parks: the breathtaking
mountain environs of Torres del Paine National Park, Chile , and
Argentina 's Los Glaciares National Park . You'll see the best
of both on foot - from the famous ice-clad peaks and granite needles
of the Torres del Paine in Paine National Park to the sheer-walled
granite shark fin of 11,073-foot Fitzroy in Los Glaciares National
Park . An ideal adventure for those who enjoy long hikes through
landscapes so scenic they're beyond belief.
Strenuous
day hikes, 5-10 hours
No back-packing,
all equipment is transported by vehicles, boats, or porters
